With Vista MS introduced a great number of features. But its minimum system requirements and its nagging security prevented me from upgrading to it. And even the way MS tried to sell it (1 GB RAM isn't enough for it but still many laptops were shipped with it and vista was slow) , it didn't go down too well and it reflected in its sales. MS had to extend support for XP.
And then they tried to clear up the mess with windows 7. I was curious to know as to how they were to do it and so I installed Windows 7. Boy I liked it may be I liked it a lot.
I extracted the setup files from an ISO image and installed it directly from XP (just like any other program-no CD required). It was a breeze. It was faster than Vista and the interface was cool. Its features like jumplists, taskbar, aeropeek, aeroshake all were pretty good. And it supported almost all of my hardware. Another good thing is that the programs which were already installed in XP were also running in 7. So all in all it was pretty good. But it took 8 GB of hard disk space. Linux on the other hand takes almost half of it (correct me if I am wrong) and has an excellent support for many a hardware. Many features looked to be inspired from Mac or Linux. Innovating, inspiring and competing only leads to a better software and that translates to better user experience. So no big deal.
Had it not been for my machine, I would have upgraded to 7, but I still find XP a little cosy. But then again experiences vary from person to person.
